What is a TLD

Internet addresses are composed basically by three parts splitted with dots: computer, domain and TLD. For example, the address "www.sima.cat" is translated to: computer "www" within domain or company "sima-pc" and TLD "com" (commercial).

Top level domains (TLD) are the endings which identify Internet addresses by type or State.

So, we have the endings .com (commercial), .net (network) or .org (organization), and .it (Italy), .fr (France) or .uk (United Kingdom). Those last ones match country code top level domains (ccTLD) and they are different from generic TLD because they are composed by two letters instead of three letters or more (.biz, .info, .museum).

Since year 2002, European Parliament and Europe Council have started the process for .eu country code top level domain acknowledgement, according to articles 156 and 251 of the Union Treaty.

As soon as available, any citizen or entity from any contry of European Union can register and use its own domain .eu, provided that following conditions would be done.

Who can register a .eu domain

To register a .eu domain names you must be one of the following:

undertakings having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Community;
organisations established within the European Community without prejudice to the application of national law;
natural persons resident within the European Community.

Which names can be registered

Domain names must match a number of formal and semanthic rules:

between 2 and 63 characters long;
only can contain the letters "a" to "z", the numbers "0" to "9" and the "-" (hyphen);
must not begin or end with a "-" (hyphen);
must not contain a hyphen "-" on the 3rd and 4th position;
domains eurid.eu, registry.eu, nic.eu, dns.eu, internic.eu, whois.eu, das.eu, coc.eu, eurethix.eu, eurethics.eu ni euthics.eu can not be registered;
must not match alpha-2 codes representing countries;
those with a racist or defamatory content can not be registered either.

When a .eu domain can be registered

Depending on the requester characteristics, the register period will begin:

public bodies and holders of trademarks: first phase, foreseen since August or September of 2005;
holders of other rights recognised in the national law of a member state: second phase, since two months later the first one has been started;
any other (open period on the first-come-first-served basis): third phase, since four months later the first one has been started.

How the register shall be made

Warning: Any type of pre-register can not be made nowadays, there aren't any accredited company for acting as a domain registrar and any pre-register can not be guaranteed to be accepted when the requesting preiod will begin; if they ask for money, it's truely a swindle, besides.

Price and register time

Price will be initially 10 EUR a year and register will be taken on twelve months periods, automatically renewable on its expiration.
